Serves 8

Ingredients:

    • 6 to 8 slices toasted bread, cut in small pieces
    • 1/2 cup raisins
    • 1 cup chopped nuts
    • 8 slices mild Cheddar cheese
    • 2 ounces anise candies, optional
    • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
    • 1 stick cinnamon
    • 1 1/2 cup water

Directions: Preheat oven to 325 degrees fahrenheit. In a lightly greased 8x8 baking dish, spread half of the bread pieces. Sprinkle with half the raisins, nuts and cheese. Repeat second layer. Put candies on top. In medium saucepan cook brown sugar, cinnamon and water until it makes syrup. Pour half over bread mixture. Bake 10 minutes and remove from oven. Pour remaining syrup over bread and bake 15 minutes.

Prep Time: 5 minutes        Cooking Time: 25 minutes

Serving Suggestions: Can eat it warm or cold. A traditional Lenten dish.
