Youth and Violence: What Are The Red Flags?
Information supplied by Waukesha Memorial Hospital
The Incidence of Violence among youth has reached unparalleled levels in our society, according to the American Psychological Association (APA). An astonishing one in 12 high schoolers is threatened or injured with a weapon each year.
In the wake of school tragedies nationwide, parents are increasingly concerned about violence by youth and its warning signs. According to the APA, the following signs suggest that violence is a serious possibility:
- Loss of temper daily
- Frequent physical fighting
- Significant vandalism or property damage
- Increase in use of drugs or alcohol
- Increase in risk-taking behavior
- Detailed plans to commit acts of violence
- Announcing threats or plans for hurting others
- Enjoying hurting animals
- Carrying a weapon
In addition, the association notes that the potential for violence exists in a person who displays the following warning signs over a period of time:
- A history of violent or aggressive behavior
- Serious drug or alcohol use
- Gang membership or strong desire to be in a gang
- Access to or fascination with weapons, especially guns
- Threatening others regularly
- Trouble controlling feeling like anger
- Withdrawal from friends and usual activities
- Feeling rejected or alone
- Having been a victim of bullying
- Poor school performance
- History of discipline problems or frequent run-ins with authority
- Feeling constantly disrespected
- Failing to acknowledge the feelings or rights of others
"Probably the most important thing parents can do is to communicate with their school and other activities," says Eric Schwietering, MD, a child and adolescent psychiatrist with Waukesha Memorial Hospital's Center for Behavioral Health. Most schools have initiated preventive programs and need parental help. "Parents who get involved," says Schwietering, "have a much better idea of the real dangers and what can be done about them."
