Be Smart About Toy Shopping

Toys are very important to a child. They serve as development tools and help sharpen personality and interest skills. Many times, it is difficult to choose the appropriate toy for a child. Here are some helpful tips to assist you with your shopping experience.
- Know the age of the child you are shopping for.
- Know the child's current skills (walk, talk, throw a ball)
- Know the interests of the child (sports, geography, musical instruments, building)
- Know the child's personality (independent thinker, social, likes to run and jump)
- If the child has special abilities, it is a good idea to ask for suggestions from professionals who work with the child.

Have a price range in mind, usually toys fall in three groups:
- under $15
- $15-$30
- over $30
While in the toy store: Don't go through the whole toy department or toy store -- look for the sections of toys that match the age range of the child.
Look on end displays for popular merchandise and advertised sale products.
If you are buying a trendy or so-called "hot" toy ask yourself two questions before purchasing it:
- Are you only buying it because everyone has one or does the child really want it?
- Is this a responsible purchase that is age appropriate and matches the child's skills and interests?
