There's no magic pill, herbal remedy or medical treatment that stops a baby from crying. And what may be soothing to one baby may cause fussing in another. Here are some ways you can calm your little bundle:
- Show your baby your face.
- Rock, walk or take them for a stroller or car ride.
- Talk to your baby in a steady, soft voice.
- Pick up and hold your baby close.
- Sing or hum to them.
- Wrap your baby snugly (not tightly) in a blanket.
- Stroke one area of your baby's body such as their head, foot or back.
Sometimes babies may need to cry, but don't let it go on for longer than 10 minutes at a time. Long periods of crying may mean your baby is sick or in pain - contact your doctor when your baby cries a lot. If your baby cries despite all your efforts, don't take it personally. They'll cry less often or stop altogether as they get older.
