He can be highly functioning, there is a huge spectrum of this diagnosis. You amy want to ask the school if they can suggest someone to evaluate him as well as your pediatrician. In regard to your husband, it is very scary to have your child labeled especially with a mental illness. However, the rewards of it are priceless! I work in the mental health and behavioral health industry and it is very hard to navigate at times. If you have a 'Family Resource Center' in your area give them a call and tell them what is going on. Sometimes they have advocates that can help and even attend meetings at the school. It can be intimidating when YOU KNOW somethings not right but everyone else it telling you your wrong. You are the expert of your own child. Follow your instincts until you find all the answers and your comfortable with them. I wish you much luck on this new path! You are doing the right thing for your son! =)
