Well he is still coming into his teenegae years... 14! Maybe his dad should have a one to one talk with him and see what's going on, because clearly something is. It's one thing to be shy with other people and big functions but to not sprak to your own family there must be something underlyning this "action". Once you resolve that why not have a family outting get everyone reconnected, tell him to invite friends over, See if theres something that he can do get him out of his shell, a sport/club/pet...just try your hardest because the worst feeling is your child slipping away.
