I understand how frustrating this can be. The relationship between parents and children is constantly shifting. He is exploring his identity and is trying to be a separate person from you. it can be hurtful, and he indicated that he understands that he did hurt your feelings. This is tricky. I say you can talk to him and maybe have a conversation about it. maybe you can reassure him that be you being there that won't include you "babying" him. It seems he is more worried about what his peers think and their perception of him as being a "baby". Good luck!
